Your route

Day by day

Lagoon days, freshwater calm

Bacalar Lagoon

Day 1: Welcome to the Lake of Seven Colors

Welcome to Mexico! Arrive in Cancún and head south to Bacalar, where shimmering lagoon waters welcome you to your first days in paradise. Check into your lagoonfront retreat and spend the afternoon swimming, kayaking, or simply watching the water shift through shades of blue.

Day 2: Champagne on the lagoon

Step aboard your private boat to explore Bacalar’s beautiful lagoon. Cruise through quiet channels and open water, stopping to swim and float in luminous shades of blue. Sip champagne on board as you revel in these spectacular surroundings. A day to drift, dip, and enjoy being here.

Day 3: Lazy lagoon days & a table for two

Hit the reset button today. Swim from the dock, paddle a kayak across the lagoon, or settle into a shady spot with a good book. This evening, enjoy a private romantic dinner beside the water. Just the two of you and one very beautiful view.

Isla Holbox

Day 4: From lagoon shores to island paradise

Bid farewell to Bacalar and travel north for the ferry crossing to Isla Holbox. Check into your island retreat and spend the afternoon unwinding by the sea. Sandy streets, warm breezes, and turquoise waters. Welcome to the next chapter of your Mexican escape.

Day 5: Sandbars, sea & champagne

Head out on a private sandbar or catamaran excursion through Holbox’s shallow turquoise seas. Swim in clear waters, wade across sandy shallows, and sip champagne as the day drifts toward sunset. There’s plenty of time to soak up the scenery and enjoy the delicious feeling of being far from everything.

Day 6: Settle into island time

Spend the day enjoying the beautiful seas surrounding your island retreat. Walk the beach, cycle along sandy streets, or claim a shady spot and watch the water turn from turquoise to sea-glass green. If the season and conditions are right, an optional wildlife excursion to see flamingos or whale sharks can be arranged. Otherwise, settle into island time and let the day unfold.

Day 7: A day in paradise & dinner beneath the stars

Take one last day to settle deeply into a laid-back island vibe. Wander the beach, enjoy a final swim, or relax with your toes in the sand. After a relaxing final day on Isla Holbox, enjoy a romantic, beachfront candlelight dinner beneath the stars.

Day 8: Farewell to island shores

Refreshed and revived, bid farewell to paradise. Return by ferry and road to Cancún for your onward travels.

Our top picks

Where to stay

Boca de Agua

Elevated wooden treehouses disappear into the vegetation beside Bacalar’s lagoon at Boca de Agua. The low-impact design preserves much of the existing landscape, while swimming, paddling, and time on the water remain central to how the property works.

Casa Hormiga

Casa Hormiga

A few blocks from Bacalar Lagoon, Casa Hormiga is an intimate retreat built around gardens, courtyards, and a substantial wellness program. Its earthy interiors and small scale offer a quieter alternative to the larger waterfront hotels nearby.

Our Habitas Bacalar

Our Habitas Bacalar

Along the shores of Bacalar Lagoon, Habitas places low-rise rooms among jungle with communal spaces facing the water. Kayaking, paddleboarding, wellness, and outdoor dining keep most of the stay tied to the lagoon itself.

Nomade Holbox Mexico

Nômade Holbox

At the quieter end of Holbox, Nômade spreads treehouses, tents, and suites between mangroves and the Gulf of Mexico. Organic architecture and wellness programming reflect the island’s slower pace, with the beach immediately beyond the property.

Ser Casasandra

Ser Casasandra

Founded by artist Sandra Pérez Lozano, the hotel is filled with original artwork, hosts an annual art-focused festival and artist residency, and rooms intentionally omit TVs, phones, and alarm clocks. It is intentionally low-tech, with no in-room TV and limited connectivity, and the town center is walkable but not immediate at 10 to 15 minutes on foot.

Casa Tortugas Holbox

Casa Las Tortugas Petit Beach Hotel & Spa

Named for the 13 sea turtles that returned to nest on the beach the night before its 2003 opening, the hotel sits directly on Holbox's main beach with a rooftop pool and private plunge pools in select suites. The minimum age of 12 rules out travel with younger children, and the decor leans more casual, beach-cabana style than high-polish luxury.
