Nicaragua itineraries: 5, 10 and 11 days from León to Little Corn Island

Three Nicaragua itineraries from trips we plan for clients: five days in Granada and Ometepe, ten days from the Pacific to Little Corn Island, and eleven days of colonial cities and volcanoes.

By Osaviva Travel

Picture this: coffee on a hotel terrace in Granada, the cathedral's domes glowing against the evening sky. A few days later you're crossing Lake Nicaragua by ferry toward the twin volcanoes of Ometepe, and before the trip is over you're sailing past Caribbean reefs off Little Corn Island with a cold drink in hand. That's Nicaragua. It's a little smaller than New York State, yet it holds colonial cities, smoking volcanoes, a vast freshwater lake and coastlines on two seas. The trick is matching your bases to your days: two for five days, three for ten, three for eleven.

These three Nicaragua itineraries come straight from trips we plan for our clients, with the same routes, pacing and travel days. Borrow them as they are, or use them as a jumping-off point. Either way, Nicaragua has a way of calling you back.

5 days in Nicaragua: Granada and Ometepe

Five days is just right for a taste of Nicaragua's lake country. Granada sits about an hour from the international airport in Managua, and Ometepe Island is a short drive and ferry ride beyond it, so two nights in each gives you colonial streets, volcano views and slow island days.

Day 1: Welcome to Granada. Land in Managua and meet your private driver for the journey to Granada. Check into your stylish hotel, then head out to explore cobblestone streets, lively markets and colorful cafés.

Day 2: Coffee, zip lines & the isletas. Ride up the green slopes of Mombacho Volcano to Hacienda El Progreso, home to Café Las Flores, to see how the coffee is grown and processed. After lunch, take to the trees on a zip line with jungle and valley views. Later, paddle among the scenic isletas of Lake Nicaragua as Mombacho rises in the distance.

Day 3: Across the lake to Ometepe. Travel south to San Jorge and cross Lake Nicaragua by ferry to Ometepe. Check into your hillside lodge with wide views across the water, and spend the afternoon in a hammock admiring the island's volcanic landscape.

Day 4: Springs & forest trails. Swim and float in the freshwater pools of Ojo de Agua, fed by underground springs and shaded by palms. Or explore farmland and forest with a local guide, learning about medicinal plants and daily life on Ometepe on the way to a waterfall swim.

Day 5: Farewell to Nicaragua. Cross back to the mainland by ferry and transfer to Managua for your flight home.

Insider's tip: Dreaming of the ocean? Swap Ometepe for two nights on the Pacific coast, where jungle-backed beaches and open surf make an easy pairing with Granada. Our guide to the prettiest beaches in Nicaragua will help you pick your stretch of sand.

10 days in Nicaragua: Pacific, lake and Caribbean

Ten days is our favorite length for couples. Three very different retreats take you from a private reserve on the Pacific coast to a private island on Lake Nicaragua, then on to the white sand of Little Corn Island in the Caribbean. This route follows our Pacific, Lake & Caribbean itinerary, from $3,850 per person.

Day 1: Welcome to the Pacific coast. Arrive in Managua and head south to your retreat in a private reserve. Check into your open-air villa overlooking sea and jungle, then spend the afternoon swimming, lounging or watching the light change across the bay.

Day 2: Horseback trails where jungle meets sea. Ride with your guide along coastal paths between forest and shore, then join a guided nature walk to learn about the reserve's ecosystems and conservation work. Spend the afternoon kayaking, swimming or relaxing beside your private plunge pool.

Day 3: A lazy day on Pacific shores. Walk the sands of Playa Ocotal, take a dip when conditions allow, or settle into a hammock as the breeze rustles the palms overhead.

Day 4: A private island on Lake Nicaragua. Travel inland to Lake Nicaragua and board a small boat for the final approach to your island lodge beneath Mombacho Volcano. Spend the rest of the day enjoying the lake views.

Day 5: Granada, Masaya & Mombacho. Cross to the mainland for a full day out: wander Granada's colorful streets and markets, browse Masaya's artisan stalls, then walk Mombacho's cool cloud forest with a guide. Return to your island by late afternoon for dinner beside the lake.

Day 6: Beach-bound. Transfer to Managua for a short flight to Big Corn Island, then continue by boat to Little Corn and check into your rustic beachfront sanctuary on white sand shores.

Day 7: Sailing & snorkeling with Miskito sailors. Glide along the coastline in a 40-foot handcrafted sailboat captained by Miskito sailors. Snorkel offshore reefs, then relax on deck with a wedge of watermelon and a cold drink as you sail back to your beachfront retreat.

Day 8: Jungle paths & powdery sand. Take a paddleboard out for a spin, or walk jungle paths beneath mango, coconut and breadfruit trees to find a quiet stretch of sand for the afternoon.

Day 9: Island time. Enjoy a final full day beside the Caribbean: the beach, a hammock beneath the palms, or your terrace above the turquoise water.

Day 10: Farewell to the Corn Islands. Transfer by boat to Big Corn Island for your flight to Managua and your connection home.

Prefer colonial cities and volcanoes? Volcanoes, Colonial Cities & Ometepe trades the beaches for León, Granada and Ometepe Island, with volcano boarding and island hikes along the way. Eleven days, from $2,875 per person.

Eleven days lets you see Nicaragua's volcanic heart at a relaxed pace: the colonial cities of León and Granada, then four nights on Ometepe Island in the middle of Lake Nicaragua. Day 4: South to Granada. Travel south through dry tropical forest dotted with volcanoes. Check into your stylish hotel, then head out to explore Granada's cobblestone streets, markets and cafés.

Day 5: Fine coffee & zip line thrills. Spend the morning at Hacienda El Progreso, home to Café Las Flores, on the slopes of Mombacho Volcano, learning how the coffee is grown and processed. After lunch, zip line through the trees with sweeping jungle and valley views.

Day 6: The isletas by kayak. Paddle through the isletas with a guide, watching for birds and other wildlife as Mombacho rises in the distance. Tonight, enjoy a private candlelit dinner in a historic courtyard.

Day 7: Across the lake to Ometepe. Travel to San Jorge and take the ferry across Lake Nicaragua to Ometepe. Check into your hillside lodge and spend the afternoon in a hammock with views across the water. Curious about what lives in the lake? Read about Lake Nicaragua's freshwater sharks.

Add the Caribbean: Love the idea of ending with white sand? Our Pacific, Lake & Caribbean itinerary finishes with four nights on Little Corn Island, sailing and snorkeling with Miskito sailors. Ten days, from $3,850 per person. Ask us about adding a few Little Corn nights to the end of this route.

  • 11 days: it's your first trip and you want colonial cities, volcano adventures and slow island days, all at an easy pace.

Whichever you choose, give each base at least two nights, three if you can. Looking for hotel ideas? See our guide to where to stay in Nicaragua. Want a little beach inspiration too? Here are the 7 prettiest beaches in Nicaragua.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Nicaragua?

Ten to eleven days is ideal for a first trip, with time for the colonial cities, Ometepe Island and either the Pacific coast or the Corn Islands. Five days works for a short trip to Granada and the lake.

What's the best time of year to visit Nicaragua?

We plan most Nicaragua trips between November and August. The dry season, roughly December through April, brings sunny days on the Pacific side. From May, the landscapes turn green, with showers that often arrive in the afternoon. The Caribbean coast and the Corn Islands have a wetter climate of their own, so we time island stays carefully. Our guide to the best time to visit Nicaragua has the details month by month.

How do you get to Ometepe Island?

Drive from Granada or Managua to the port of San Jorge, near Rivas, then take the ferry across Lake Nicaragua to Ometepe, about an hour on the water. We arrange your private driver on both sides of the crossing.

How do you get to the Corn Islands?

Fly from Managua to Big Corn Island, then continue to Little Corn by boat. We time your connections so you arrive on Little Corn in time to enjoy the afternoon on the beach.

Is Nicaragua safe to visit?

Travel advisories change, so we recommend checking your government's latest advice for Nicaragua when you start planning and again before you travel. On our trips, private drivers handle transfers and local guides lead excursions, and the everyday precautions you'd take anywhere go a long way. Our article Is Nicaragua safe to travel to? covers what the U.S. advisory says, tips for solo travelers and how to travel with peace of mind.

How much does a Nicaragua itinerary cost?

Our sample Nicaragua itineraries run from $2,875 per person for eleven days of colonial cities, volcanoes and Ometepe to $3,850 per person for ten days from the Pacific to the Caribbean. International flights aren't included.
