DESTINATION GUIDE

Tenorio & the Northern Highlands

Luxury rainforest lodges, Río Celeste, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife make Tenorio and the Northern Highlands one of Costa Rica's most rewarding regions for travelers looking to slow the pace and experience a quieter side of the country.

Luxury rainforest lodges, winding rivers, waterfalls, abundant wildlife, and one of Costa Rica's most famous hikes all come together in the Tenorio region and Northern Highlands. While many visitors stop for a few hours to see Río Celeste, we recommend spending three or four nights here to really explore.

It's one of our favorite alternatives to Arenal for travelers looking for beautiful rainforest scenery, exceptional lodges, and fewer crowds.

Why stay in Tenorio & the Northern Highlands?

Most visitors know the region for Río Celeste, where volcanic minerals create its remarkable blue water. It's certainly worth the hike, but we'd encourage you to look beyond the national park.

Many of our favorite lodges are destinations in their own right. Spend the morning walking rainforest trails on the property, cool off beneath a waterfall, look for monkeys and toucans, then return for lunch overlooking the forest. The pace here is noticeably slower than Arenal, with fewer tour buses and far less traffic.

This is also one of the best places in Costa Rica to stay somewhere truly special. Properties like Origins Lodge, Río Perdido, and Hideaway Río Celeste all offer completely different experiences, making the hotel an important part of your itinerary rather than simply somewhere to sleep.

Our take: If you're choosing between another night in Arenal or adding Tenorio, we'd usually recommend adding Tenorio. The scenery feels different, the lodges are exceptional, and it's a much quieter way to experience Costa Rica's rainforest.

Is Tenorio a good fit?

Tenorio is a great fit if you:

  • Want to visit Río Celeste.
  • Enjoy hiking and spending time in nature.
  • Appreciate boutique hotels and luxury lodges.
  • Prefer quieter destinations over busy tourist towns.
  • Like wildlife, waterfalls, and rainforest.

Arenal is a better choice if you're looking for a wider range of adventure activities, hot springs, and restaurants. Monteverde is a stronger fit if the cloud forest is your priority.

Best things to do

Hike to Río Celeste

Río Celeste is the region's best-known attraction. The trail through Tenorio Volcano National Park passes rainforest, waterfalls, bubbling springs, and the point where two clear rivers combine to create the river's remarkable blue color through a natural chemical reaction.

Explore the rainforest

The Northern Highlands protect a quieter side of Costa Rica, where well-maintained trails wind through primary and secondary rainforest rich with wildlife. Guided hikes regularly reveal monkeys, sloths, toucans, poison dart frogs, and countless tropical birds.

Swim beneath waterfalls

Several beautiful waterfalls lie within easy reach of Tenorio, offering natural swimming holes surrounded by rainforest. Depending on your lodge, many can be reached without traveling far from your hotel.

Go horseback riding

Private ranches throughout the region offer horseback rides through rainforest, rivers, and open countryside. It's a peaceful way to experience an area that's still largely untouched by mass tourism.

Experience Río Perdido

The volcanic canyon at Río Perdido offers one of Costa Rica's most unique adventure settings, with suspended bridges, thermal rivers, hiking trails, mountain biking, and canyon-side hot springs surrounded by tropical dry forest.

Go tubing or rafting

Nearby rivers provide opportunities for river tubing and whitewater rafting, with experiences ranging from gentle family-friendly floats to more adventurous rapids depending on water levels.

Join a guided night walk

Rainforest comes alive after sunset. Guided walks offer opportunities to spot tree frogs, snakes, insects, spiders, mammals, and other nocturnal wildlife rarely seen during the day.

Relax at your lodge

Many travelers come to the Northern Highlands as much for the hotels as the attractions. Whether soaking in a private hot tub, enjoying exceptional dining, or watching hummingbirds from your terrace, slowing down is part of the experience.

Where to stay

Unlike Arenal, accommodations are spread across forests, valleys, and private reserves rather than clustered around a central town.

Each lodge offers a different experience. Some focus on luxury and fine dining, others emphasize adventure or wellness, while many have their own trail systems, wildlife, waterfalls, and spectacular views. Choosing the right hotel is often just as important as choosing the destination itself.

Our favorite hotels

Origins Lodge

One of Costa Rica's finest boutique hotels, Origins combines luxurious private lodges, exceptional cuisine, panoramic mountain views, and outstanding service. It's one of our favorite honeymoon properties in the country.

Río Perdido

Set within a dramatic volcanic canyon, Río Perdido offers an experience unlike anywhere else in Costa Rica. Thermal rivers, suspended bridges, hiking trails, mountain biking, and contemporary bungalows make it perfect for travelers who enjoy both luxury and adventure.

Hideaway Río Celeste

Located just outside Tenorio Volcano National Park, Hideaway Río Celeste blends contemporary design with lush rainforest surroundings. It's an excellent base for visiting Río Celeste while enjoying wildlife, walking trails, and a peaceful atmosphere.

Best time to visit

The Northern Highlands are rewarding throughout the year.

During the dry season, hiking trails are generally easier to explore and rainfall is less frequent. The green season brings fuller waterfalls, lush rainforest, and excellent wildlife activity.

If Río Celeste is your main reason for visiting, remember that its famous blue color depends on weather conditions. Following periods of heavy rainfall, sediment can temporarily reduce the intensity of the color until the river clears again.

Pair it with

  • Arenal for volcanoes, hot springs, rafting, and adventure.
  • Bajos del Toro for cloud forest, waterfalls, and boutique mountain lodges.
  • Papagayo for luxury beach resorts and calm Pacific beaches.
  • Monteverde for cloud forests and hanging bridges.
  • Rincón de la Vieja for geothermal landscapes and tropical dry forest.

Getting there

The Northern Highlands sit between Costa Rica's two international airports, making the region easy to combine with both Guanacaste and Central Valley itineraries.

Approximate driving times:

  • Guanacaste Airport: 2 to 2.5 hours
  • San José Airport: 3.5 to 4 hours
  • Arenal: 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Papagayo: 2.5 to 3 hours
  • Monteverde: 3.5 to 4 hours
