Papagayo Peninsula

Calm beaches, exceptional resorts, easy access from Liberia, and a wide range of boating activities make Papagayo one of Costa Rica's strongest choices for a luxury beach vacation.

Sheltered bays, calm water, and a dramatic peninsula stretching into the Gulf of Papagayo have attracted many of Costa Rica's finest resorts to this little peninsula in Costa Rica's northwestern corner. Four Seasons, Andaz, Nekajui, Casa Chameleon, and several private residences all share the coastline, yet the area never feels like a busy beach town.

With Liberia Airport only about 30 minutes away, Papagayo is often the first stop on a Costa Rica itinerary. It's a great choice for travelers who value an exceptional hotel, easy access to the water, and enough activities nearby to fill several days without spending hours in the car.

Why stay in Papagayo?

One of the biggest differences between Papagayo and much of Costa Rica's coastline is the Gulf itself. The peninsula protects many of the beaches from the open Pacific, creating calmer conditions for swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, and boating than you'll find along many surf beaches farther south.

The hotels are another reason people choose Papagayo. Rather than being clustered around a town, they're spread along the peninsula, each with its own stretch of coastline and distinct personality. Some focus on families, others on golf, wellness, or couples, so choosing the right hotel is just as important as choosing the destination.

Papagayo also works well for travelers who enjoy being on the water. Marina Papagayo is a departure point for catamaran cruises, private yacht charters, scuba diving, snorkeling, whale watching, and sport fishing. The Catalina Islands are within reach for experienced divers, while shorter boat trips explore secluded beaches and hidden coves around the gulf.

Our take: We usually recommend Papagayo to travelers who expect to spend as much time enjoying their hotel as they do exploring Costa Rica. If you're looking for walkable restaurants, beach bars, and nightlife, we'd point you toward Tamarindo instead.

Is Papagayo a good fit?

Papagayo is a great fit if you:

  • Want to stay at one of Costa Rica's premier luxury resorts.
  • Prefer calm beaches for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding.
  • Enjoy golf, spas, fine dining, and resort amenities.
  • Plan to spend time on the water.
  • Want to minimize travel time after arriving in Costa Rica.

Another destination may suit you better if you're looking for a walkable beach town with independent restaurants, cafés, shops, and nightlife.

Best things to do

Spend the day on the water

The Gulf of Papagayo is naturally sheltered, creating calm conditions for boating throughout much of the year. Private yacht charters, sailing excursions, catamaran cruises, and island-hopping trips are among the peninsula's signature experiences.

Snorkel or dive the Catalina Islands

The Catalina Islands are one of Costa Rica's premier dive destinations. Volcanic rock formations attract reef sharks, eagle rays, sea turtles, octopus, and large schools of tropical fish, while snorkeling trips explore the shallower reefs when sea conditions allow.

Go sport fishing

The Pacific waters off Papagayo support excellent offshore fishing throughout the year. Depending on the season, anglers target sailfish, marlin, tuna, mahi-mahi, roosterfish, and snapper on both half-day and full-day charters.

Paddle the sheltered bays

Papagayo's calm coastline makes it one of Costa Rica's best places for kayaking and paddleboarding. Early mornings often bring glassy conditions, allowing visitors to explore quiet coves and watch for rays, sea turtles, and tropical fish.

Play golf

The Arnold Palmer Signature Course at Peninsula Papagayo is consistently ranked among Costa Rica's finest golf courses. Ocean views, dramatic elevation changes, and tropical forest combine to create one of the country's most memorable rounds.

Explore the peninsula's trail network

More than 15 miles of hiking and biking trails wind through tropical dry forest, connecting beaches, scenic viewpoints, and secluded coves throughout the peninsula. Wildlife sightings often include monkeys, coatis, deer, iguanas, and colorful birds.

Relax on secluded beaches

Several quiet beaches are tucked around the peninsula, including Playa Virador, Playa Nacascolo, and Playa Blanca. Most are easily reached from the surrounding resorts and offer calm water that's ideal for swimming.

Enjoy your resort

Unlike many destinations in Costa Rica, Papagayo is as much about the hotel as the destination itself. Whether you're spending the afternoon at the spa, relaxing beside the pool, dining overlooking the ocean, or simply enjoying your villa, the resort experience is often the highlight of the trip.

Where to stay

Your choice of hotel defines your experience more than almost anywhere else in Costa Rica.

Each resort has its own beaches, restaurants, activities, and atmosphere, so selecting the right property is more important than choosing a particular part of the peninsula. Some hotels are better suited to families, while others focus on couples, wellness, golf, or privacy.

If you're looking for a walkable town with local restaurants and cafés outside your hotel, consider nearby Las Catalinas, Flamingo, or Tamarindo instead.

Our favorite hotels

Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica

The Four Seasons remains the benchmark for luxury in Costa Rica. Set between two beautiful beaches, it combines exceptional service, spacious accommodations, outstanding dining, golf, and one of the country's finest children's programs. It's equally well suited to families, couples, and multigenerational travelers.

Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve

Costa Rica's first Ritz-Carlton Reserve brings an intimate, ultra-luxury experience to Peninsula Papagayo. Expansive suites, private residences, exceptional dining, and a spectacular cliffside setting make it one of the country's most exclusive places to stay.

Andaz Costa Rica Resort

The Andaz offers a more contemporary interpretation of Costa Rican luxury, blending modern architecture with lush tropical surroundings. Multiple beaches, excellent restaurants, family-friendly amenities, and easy access to water sports make it one of the peninsula's most versatile resorts.

Best time to visit

Papagayo enjoys one of Costa Rica's driest climates. December through April typically brings long stretches of sunshine, low humidity, and excellent beach weather.

Even during the green season, rainfall is generally lighter than in many other parts of the country, particularly in May, June, and July. The sheltered Gulf of Papagayo also keeps boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding enjoyable for much of the year.

Pair it with

  • Rincón de la Vieja for volcanic landscapes, waterfalls, horseback riding, and hot springs.
  • Tenorio and the Northern Highlands for Río Celeste and rainforest adventures.
  • Arenal for volcanoes, hot springs, rafting, and hanging bridges.
  • Monteverde for cloud forests and cooler mountain scenery.
  • Santa Teresa or Nosara to experience Costa Rica's surf culture after a luxury resort stay.

Getting there

Papagayo is one of Costa Rica's easiest luxury destinations to reach, sitting just a short drive from Guanacaste Airport.

  • Guanacaste Airport: About 30 minutes
  • Rincón de la Vieja: About 1.5 hours

Frequently asked questions

Should I stay in Papagayo or Tamarindo?

Choose Papagayo if your priority is a luxury resort, quieter beaches, and exceptional service. Choose Tamarindo if you'd rather stay in a lively beach town with independent restaurants, surf schools, shops, and nightlife.

Is Papagayo good for swimming?

Yes. Many of the peninsula's beaches are protected by the Gulf of Papagayo, making the water calmer than at many Pacific beaches elsewhere in Costa Rica. Conditions still vary with tides and seasonal winds.

Is Papagayo a good destination for families?

Absolutely. Resorts such as the Four Seasons and Andaz offer some of the country's best family facilities, including kids' clubs, calm beaches, water sports, and spacious accommodations that work well for multigenerational trips.

How many nights should I stay?

Three to five nights is ideal. That gives you enough time to enjoy the resort, spend time on the water, experience the peninsula's beaches and trails, and still leave room for a few day trips if you'd like to explore beyond the resort.
