DESTINATION GUIDE

Costalegre

Costalegre is a long, lightly developed section of Jalisco's Pacific coast defined by private estates, ecological reserves, isolated bays, tropical dry forest, and small fishing communities. Five to eight nights are best spent in one carefully chosen property rather than moving repeatedly along slow coastal roads.

Costalegre extends south of Puerto Vallarta toward Manzanillo through a coastline of headlands, lagoons, forest, cliffs, beaches, villages, and large privately protected estates. Careyes is known for bold architecture and villas, Cuixmala occupies a vast former private estate and reserve, Las Alamandas sits on an isolated coastal property, and Four Seasons Tamarindo anchors the southern end within a large nature reserve. Distances are substantial and services between enclaves are limited.

Why stay in Costalegre?

Costalegre is not a single resort town. Hotels and villa communities are separated by long coastal roads, protected land, and small settlements. Travelers should select one primary property based on architecture, activities, and transfer access rather than trying to sample the entire coast.

Tropical dry forest, mangroves, beaches, lagoons, and agricultural land create significant ecological variation. Several of the best-known estates protect large areas around limited development, but conservation practices and community relationships should still be examined individually.

Careyes developed around distinctive Mediterranean- and Mexican-influenced villas, brightly colored structures, beaches, and a small social community. Many accommodations are private residences rather than conventional hotel rooms.

Cuixmala spans approximately 30,000 acres of reserve, farmland, wetlands, and coast. Wildlife, organic agriculture, architecture, and privacy define the stay more than outside sightseeing.

Four Seasons Tamarindo occupies a large reserve near the southern Costalegre coast, with cliff and beach accommodations, golf, and guided nature programs. It provides the broadest resort infrastructure in the region.

Swimming conditions vary by bay and season. Some beaches are protected, while others receive strong Pacific swell and are better for walking or views than casual entry.

Our take: choose one estate and allow the property to define the trip. Costalegre rewards privacy, nature, and architecture, but it is poorly suited to daily restaurant-hopping or frequent hotel changes.

Is Costalegre a good fit?

  • Want a remote Pacific coast with limited development.
  • Prefer villas, private estates, and large protected landscapes.
  • Enjoy architecture, horses, nature, and quiet beaches.
  • Are content to spend most days within one property.
  • Can accept long transfers and limited independent services.
  • Want a more secluded alternative to Los Cabos or Punta Mita.

Puerto Vallarta provides urban culture and nightlife, while Costalegre is quieter, farther apart, and far more property-led. Punta Mita has easier airport access and a greater concentration of major resorts.

Best things to do

Explore a private reserve

Naturalist-led outings can focus on tropical dry forest, wetlands, birds, mammals, agriculture, and restoration work. Programs vary widely by estate.

See Careyes architecture

Private villas, sculptural houses, plazas, and hillside viewpoints reveal the area's distinctive development history. Access depends on accommodation and current private-property rules.

Spend time on a secluded beach

Properties control access to several quiet bays, but water conditions should be checked daily. Some beaches are better for walking, kayaking, or sunset than swimming.

Ride through coastal landscapes

Selected estates offer guided horseback routes through forest, farms, or beach areas. The route should match riding experience and heat conditions.

Explore the coast by boat

Private vessels can reach coves, marine habitat, and fishing communities that are difficult to access by road. Sea conditions determine the day's range.

Learn about regional agriculture

Estate programs may include orchards, farms, livestock, or native planting. Strong interpretation connects production to water, climate, labor, and conservation.

Visit a local coastal community

A private guide can introduce fishing, markets, food, and everyday life beyond resort boundaries. Visits should direct economic benefit to residents and avoid staged encounters.

Leave time for the property

Pools, beaches, trails, wildlife observation, architecture, and quiet are central to Costalegre. Over-scheduling defeats the purpose of the remote location.

Where to stay

Stay in Careyes for private villas, bold architecture, beaches, and a small social community. The experience depends heavily on the specific residence and its staffing.

Stay at Cuixmala for a reserve-led trip with exceptional privacy, wildlife, agriculture, and highly individualized service.

Stay at Four Seasons Tamarindo for the broadest resort facilities, family programs, golf, and several accommodation categories within one property.

Stay at Las Alamandas for a much smaller, traditional coastal retreat between Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo. The remote location is best for travelers happy to remain on the estate.

Our favorite hotels

Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo

Four Seasons Tamarindo has 157 rooms and suites within a roughly 3,000-acre private reserve. The property has cliffside and beachfront accommodations, multiple beaches, golf, family programs, and guided nature activity.

Las Alamandas

Las Alamandas has 18 suites on a large private coastal estate with several beaches and extensive grounds. The tiny room count and traditional residential style suit travelers seeking quiet rather than a contemporary resort scene.

Cuixmala

Cuixmala has a limited collection of suites, casitas, and private villas across an approximately 30,000-acre reserve and working estate. Wildlife habitat, monumental architecture, and highly private accommodation define the stay.

Best time to visit

November through April is generally dry, with warm days and cooler nights. Holiday periods bring the greatest villa and resort demand.

May through October is hotter, wetter, and more humid, with tropical-storm risk. Forest and wetlands become greener, but road, boat, and beach conditions are less predictable.

Pair it with

  • Puerto Vallarta for a historic center, restaurants, art, and international flights.
  • Punta Mita & Riviera Nayarit for a greater concentration of resorts and surf towns.
  • Guadalajara for inland culture, architecture, and a major air hub.
  • Colima and Manzanillo for southern connections and additional Pacific landscapes.

Getting there

Costalegre is reached through Manzanillo or Puerto Vallarta airports, followed by a long private road transfer. Some estates can arrange small aircraft or boat access under suitable conditions.

Approximate travel times:

  • Manzanillo Airport to Four Seasons Tamarindo: 45 to 75 minutes
  • Manzanillo Airport to Careyes: 1.5 to 2.25 hours
  • Puerto Vallarta Airport to Careyes: 3 to 4.5 hours
  • Puerto Vallarta Airport to Las Alamandas: 2.5 to 4 hours
  • Careyes to Cuixmala: 20 to 40 minutes
  • Careyes to Four Seasons Tamarindo: 1.5 to 2.5 hours

Road conditions, livestock, weather, and village traffic can extend transfers. We avoid late-night arrivals when possible and do not pair a remote estate departure with a tight international connection.

Frequently asked questions

How many nights should I stay in Costalegre?

Five nights are needed to justify the transfer and settle into one property. Seven or eight nights allow more reserve activity, boating, and rest without changing hotels.

Should I split the stay between several resorts?

Usually no. Distances are long and each property is designed as a destination. Choose one primary estate unless the trip is longer than ten nights.

Is Costalegre suitable for families?

Yes at properties with family programs, villas, and appropriate pools. Some small estates are better for couples, and remote medical or shopping access should be considered.

Are the beaches swimmable?

Some bays are protected, while others have strong Pacific surf, steep shore break, or rocks. Follow the property's daily safety guidance.

Can I eat outside the resort?

Options are limited and often far apart. Careyes has some independent dining, while remote estates provide most meals on-site.

Is the region environmentally protected?

Several estates conserve large areas, but protection models differ. Ask about habitat management, wastewater, wildlife programs, local employment, and community partnerships.

Which airport is best?

Manzanillo is generally best for the southern properties, while Puerto Vallarta can work for northern Costalegre or a combined city stay. Flight availability may determine the final route.

What should I pack?

Bring lightweight clothing, strong sun protection, a compact rain layer in summer, insect repellent, walking shoes, and any essential medication because shops may be distant.
