Best time to visit Argentina

Compare Argentina’s seasons for Patagonia, Mendoza, Iguazú, and Atlantic wildlife, with advice on regional weather and travel timing.

A month-by-month guide to weather, wildlife, crowds, and the best time to visit for you.

Argentina stretches from the subtropical forests of Iguazú to the glaciers of Patagonia, creating one of the widest ranges of climates in South America. The north remains warm for much of the year, Buenos Aires experiences four distinct seasons, Mendoza enjoys a dry climate ideal for vineyards, and Patagonia is largely a summer destination. Because of the country's size, it's common to experience several different climates on the same trip. Understanding how the seasons vary between regions is the key to planning the best itinerary.

Understanding Argentina's seasons

Argentina lies in the Southern Hemisphere, so its seasons are the reverse of those in North America and Europe. Summer runs from December through February, autumn from March through May, winter from June through August, and spring from September through November. While Patagonia is best visited during the warmer months, destinations such as Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Iguazú Falls, and Northwest Argentina each have their own seasonal advantages.

Summer (December through February)

Summer brings long daylight hours and the warmest temperatures of the year, making it the prime season for Patagonia. Hiking trails, glacier excursions, and remote lodges are fully operational, while Buenos Aires becomes hot and humid. Mendoza remains dry, and Iguazú Falls experiences lush vegetation and powerful water flow, although temperatures and humidity can be intense. Christmas, New Year's, and the Southern Hemisphere summer holidays make this one of Argentina's busiest travel periods.

Shoulder seasons (March through May & September through November)

Spring and autumn offer some of the best overall travel conditions across Argentina. Buenos Aires enjoys comfortable temperatures, Mendoza comes alive during the grape harvest in March and April, and Patagonia remains accessible during much of March, October, and November. Visitor numbers are generally lower than during the summer peak, making these excellent months for multi-region itineraries.

Winter (June through August)

Winter brings snow to the Andes, opening Argentina's ski resorts, while Patagonia becomes much quieter and many seasonal lodges close. Northern Argentina enjoys mild daytime temperatures, making destinations such as Salta, Jujuy, Iguazú Falls, and the Iberá Wetlands particularly pleasant. Southern right whales also begin arriving along the Atlantic coast around Península Valdés during the winter months.
