Corn Islands

The Corn Islands are Nicaragua's Caribbean paradise, where turquoise water, coral reefs, white-sand beaches, and Creole culture create a completely different experience from the country's Pacific coast. Whether you're diving vibrant reefs, snorkeling with sea turtles, or relaxing on Little Corn Island's car-free beaches, this is Nicaragua's ultimate tropical escape.

The Corn Islands offer a side of Nicaragua that surprises many first-time visitors. Located off the country's Caribbean coast, Big Corn Island and Little Corn Island combine white-sand beaches, coral reefs, turquoise water, and a relaxed Creole culture that feels worlds away from Nicaragua's volcanoes and colonial cities. Big Corn combines a small island community with beaches and diving, Little Corn remains blissfully car-free, making it one of Central America's most peaceful island destinations.

Why stay in the Corn Islands?

The Corn Islands feel more Caribbean than Central American. English Creole is widely spoken, fresh seafood dominates local menus, reggae drifts from beachfront restaurants, and life moves at a pace dictated by the sea rather than the clock. It's a completely different cultural experience from western Nicaragua.

Big Corn Island is the transportation hub and home to the airport, small hotels, local restaurants, and a ring road that circles the island. Just offshore, Little Corn Island has an entirely different atmosphere. There are no cars or roads, only sandy footpaths connecting boutique hotels, dive shops, beaches, and small cafés hidden beneath swaying palms.

The surrounding Caribbean Sea protects vibrant coral reefs that attract divers and snorkelers throughout the year. Sea turtles, rays, reef sharks, nurse sharks, colorful tropical fish, and healthy coral gardens make the islands one of Nicaragua's premier marine destinations.

Our take: Little Corn Island is one of the Caribbean's best-kept secrets. If your idea of luxury is quiet beaches, crystal-clear water, and barefoot island living rather than large resorts, it's difficult to beat.

Is the Corn Islands a good fit?

  • Love snorkeling and diving.
  • Want a laid-back Caribbean island experience.
  • Enjoy boutique beachfront hotels.
  • Prefer quiet beaches over large resorts.
  • Like fresh seafood and local island culture.
  • Want to completely disconnect for a few days.

The Emerald Coast is a better choice for luxury resorts, surfing, and Pacific sunsets, while the Corn Islands offer Nicaragua's finest Caribbean beaches and underwater experiences.

Where to stay

Stay on Little Corn Island if you're looking for the quintessential Caribbean island experience. With no cars, no roads, and only sandy footpaths connecting beaches, boutique hotels, and dive shops, it's our favorite place to stay for travelers seeking peace, beautiful scenery, and is close to the reefs.

Stay on Big Corn Island if convenience is your priority. As the transportation hub, it has the airport, a wider selection of local restaurants, and is close to beaches, fishing charters, and the ferry to Little Corn Island.

Most visitors split their time between the two islands or base themselves on Little Corn while visiting Big Corn for a day. Together they offer a wonderful balance of authentic Caribbean culture, excellent diving, and laid-back island life.

One of the highlights of visiting the Corn Islands is exploring by boat. Whether you're heading to a dive site, snorkeling over coral reefs, fishing offshore, or simply traveling between the islands, much of the experience revolves around the Caribbean Sea.

Our favorite hotels

Yemaya Reefs

On the quiet northern shore of Little Corn Island, Yemaya Reefs faces the Caribbean from a collection of beachfront suites. There are no cars on the island, and arrival requires a boat journey from Big Corn. The extra effort brings uncrowded beaches and reef access directly offshore.

Little Corn Beach & Bungalow

This intimate beachfront property has charming bungalows, excellent snorkeling just offshore, and a relaxed atmosphere within walking distance of Little Corn's restaurants and dive shops. It's one of the island's longtime favorites.

Las Palmeras OceanView Hotel

Set on Big Corn Island, Las Palmeras has comfortable accommodations overlooking the Caribbean Sea close to beaches, restaurants, and the ferry terminal. It's an excellent option before or after spending time on Little Corn.

Frequently asked questions

How many nights should I stay?

We recommend four to six nights. That gives you plenty of time to enjoy the beaches, go diving or snorkeling, explore both islands, and settle into the relaxed Caribbean pace of life.

Should I stay on Big Corn or Little Corn Island?

Little Corn Island is our top recommendation for most travelers thanks to its boutique hotels, beautiful beaches, and car-free atmosphere. Big Corn is worth visiting, but we generally recommend staying on Little Corn and exploring Big Corn as a day trip if time allows.

Are the Corn Islands good for snorkeling and diving?

Yes. The surrounding coral reefs are among the healthiest in Nicaragua and support sea turtles, rays, reef sharks, colorful tropical fish, and abundant marine life. It's the country's premier destination for both diving and snorkeling.

Is Little Corn Island a good destination for families?

Yes, particularly for families with older children who enjoy the beach, snorkeling, kayaking, and spending time outdoors. Couples and honeymooners are especially drawn to the island's peaceful atmosphere and boutique hotels.

Do I need to stay on both islands?

Not necessarily. Most travelers choose to stay on Little Corn Island and visit Big Corn for a few hours if they'd like to explore. Little Corn has the more distinctive experience and is where we recommend spending the majority of your time.

Is the journey worth it?

Absolutely. Reaching the Corn Islands takes a little longer than Nicaragua's mainland destinations, but the reward is one of the Caribbean's least-developed island destinations, with beautiful beaches, excellent reefs, and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

Do I need a guide?

Not for enjoying the islands themselves. Local guides and dive operators are recommended for scuba diving, snorkeling excursions, fishing charters, and wildlife experiences, ensuring you get the most from the surrounding reefs and marine life.
