Belize in the Dry Season: Escape to the Tropics

The dry season in Belize, from November to April, is the country's most popular time to visit, and for good reason. Warm days settle in, the sea turns calm and clear, and the jungle stays lively without the weight of heavy rain. Conditions are reliable, comfortable, and well suited to being outdoors, whether that means exploring Maya ruins, spending long days on the reef, or slowing down in a lodge tucked into the forest.

Dry season weather in Belize brings steady sunshine and cooling breezes, making travel easier across the country. It is a season that supports both movement and rest, from boat rides and hikes to quiet evenings under open skies. This guide breaks down what to expect, including weather patterns, regional microclimates, what to pack, and the best ways to spend your time, so you can decide if the dry season fits the kind of trip you want.

Dry Season Weather in Belize: Pros & Cons

Pros

From November through April, temperatures usually sit between 70°F and 85°F (21°C to 29°C), warming as spring approaches. Trade winds keep the air comfortable, especially along the coast. Rain is limited, often just one to three inches per month, leaving plenty of clear days for snorkeling, diving, hiking, or simply being outdoors. November feels fresh and mild, while March and April bring warmer water and more active marine life.

Cons

Early in the season, nortes can briefly cool the air and roughen the sea, sometimes pushing water activities aside for a day. December sees an increase in holiday travelers, and March brings spring break crowds in some areas. By April, inland regions can climb toward 90°F (32°C), making midday breaks and shade more appealing.

Belize dry season month by month

November. The transition out of the wet season, not a clean break from it. Rain is still possible, water levels in the northern wetlands are only starting to recede, and prices haven't caught up to December yet. It's also when Garifuna Settlement Day falls, on November 19.

December and January. The coolest stretch of the season, with evenings that can dip into the 50s and low 60s°F (10°C to 18°C) inland. It's also when nortes are most frequent. Christmas and New Year are the busiest, most expensive weeks of the entire year in Belize.

February and March. Rainfall is at its lowest, skies stay clear, and the water starts to warm. March brings spring break crowds to some areas and the start of whale shark season at Gladden Spit, which runs into June. Trade winds pick up too, good news for kitesurfing or sailing near Placencia.

April. The hottest and, together with February and March, the driest stretch of the year, with inland temperatures that can push toward 90°F (32°C). Easter, Holy Week specifically, usually falls in this window, and it's one of the busiest weeks in Cayo.

Weather patterns across Belize

Northern Limestone Lowlands

In Orange Walk and Corozal, dry season temperatures range from 75°F to 86°F (24°C to 30°C). Humidity drops, and light winds move across the flat limestone landscape. It is a comfortable time for boat trips along the New River or early visits to Lamanai, when the ruins feel quiet and unhurried.

Maya Mountains and the Interior

In the Cayo District and around Caracol, daytime temperatures hover between 78°F and 86°F (26°C to 30°C), cooling significantly at night. Evenings can dip into the 50s and low 60s°F (10°C to 18°C). With little rain, trails stay dry and mornings often arrive with mist and cool air, well suited for walking, birding, or lingering over breakfast.

Coastal Plains

From Belize City south toward Dangriga, temperatures stay fairly consistent between 77°F and 84°F (25°C to 29°C). Sea breezes help offset humidity, and ocean temperatures steadily rise from November through April. Calm conditions make this a pleasant season for kayaking, paddleboarding, or coastal boat trips.

Offshore Cayes and Atolls

Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, and the offshore atolls experience temperatures between 78°F and 85°F (26°C to 30°C), with water often matching the air. Visibility on the reef is excellent, frequently reaching 100 feet. Early-season nortes may cause brief choppiness, but conditions generally settle quickly.

What to pack for the dry season in Belize

Packing for the dry season is straightforward:

  • Lightweight layers for the day, plus a sweater or scarf for cooler evenings inland
  • A swimsuit and an easy cover-up for beaches and boats
  • A thin jacket for the occasional early-season shower
  • Water-friendly sandals and comfortable shoes for walking
  • Sunglasses, a hat, and reef-safe sunscreen
  • A reusable water bottle and a small fan for warmer afternoons
  • A camera suited for water and sun, along with reliable chargers

With lighter packing and reliable weather, the dry season is ideal for settling into great places to stay in Belize, from jungle lodges in Cayo to Belize beach resorts on the cayes or Placencia. Many best resorts in Belize offer dry-season perks like open-air dining, private reef excursions, or stargazing decks, making it easy to transition from adventure to relaxation.

Best Things to Do in the Dry Season

The dry season opens access to some of Belize's most memorable experiences:

  • Reef from Above: Take a small plane over the Belize Barrier Reef and land on a quiet caye for lunch. April's light offers particularly clear views.
  • Cave Exploration: Visit Actun Tunichil Muknal during the dry months, when conditions make the journey more comfortable and reliable.
  • Wind and Water Sports: March trade winds bring ideal conditions for kite surfing and sailing near Placencia.
  • Night Skies: Spend an evening at a jungle lodge in southern Belize, where clear skies reveal stars rarely visible elsewhere.

Maya sites like Caracol, Xunantunich, and Lamanai are easier to reach on dry roads. Hiking and waterfalls in the Maya Mountains, especially around Mountain Pine Ridge, are at their most reliable this time of year. If a trip covers more than one region, our Belize travel logistics guide covers the actual routes and transfer times, which tend to be more predictable in dry conditions.

Wildlife Encounters in the Dry Season

Drier conditions often make wildlife easier to spot:

Birds in the northern wetlands. Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the country's best birding spots, and dry season is generally considered the strongest window to visit. As the lagoon and surrounding wetlands recede through the season, wading birds and waterfowl concentrate in the shrinking pools, and it's one of the more reliable places in Belize to spot a jabiru stork, the largest flying bird in Central and South America.

Howler monkeys. The Community Baboon Sanctuary in Bermudian Landing, north of Belize City, is a low-key way to see wild black howler monkeys close to the road rather than deep in the jungle. ("Baboon" is the local nickname for the howler, not a separate species.) Dry trails make the short walks here easier year-round, not just in the dry months.

Reef life. Rays, turtles, and reef sharks turn up on an ordinary snorkeling or diving day, and calmer dry-season water generally makes for easier viewing conditions, though nothing on the reef is ever guaranteed.

Whale sharks at Gladden Spit. March through June, timed around the full moon and the Cubera snapper spawn, is when whale sharks are most likely to appear at Gladden Spit. Sightings depend on the lunar cycle and the spawn actually happening on schedule, and the reserve is regulated by Belize's Fisheries Department, so this isn't a guaranteed encounter to build an entire trip around. Our whale shark snorkeling guide covers current timing and how the experience actually works.

Tapirs. Belize's national animal is elusive by nature, and dry trails in the Maya Mountains mostly mean a better chance at tracks and habitat, not a guaranteed sighting. Treat a tapir encounter as a possibility on a guided walk, not an expectation.

Cultural and seasonal highlights

Garifuna Settlement Day, November 19, marks the arrival of the Garifuna people in Belize and is celebrated with a dawn reenactment, drumming, and parades, most visibly in Dangriga and Hopkins. If you're in southern Belize that week, it's worth building a day around rather than treating as incidental.

Maya-led cacao traditions in Toledo. Learning how cacao is grown and prepared with Q'eqchi' and Mopan Maya communities in Toledo is a strong addition to a southern Belize itinerary any time in the dry season, not a single-month event.

Easter in San Ignacio. Holy Week (dates move every year with the Easter calendar) blends religious processions with local markets and traditional meals, and it's also one of the busiest weeks in Cayo. Expect tighter availability and some shifted opening hours if your trip lands during it.

Travel Tips for the Dry Season

  • Plan ahead: December and March book up quickly, particularly in Placencia and the Cayo District.
  • Travel smart: Domestic flights from Belize City save time and avoid dusty roads late in the season.
  • Stay flexible: Brief weather shifts or rising heat can change plans slightly. A relaxed approach goes a long way.
  • Use local knowledge: Lodges can often arrange private excursions or quieter alternatives to popular outings.
  • Protect your trip: Travel insurance helps keep plans flexible during busy travel periods.

Crowds, prices, and how far ahead to book

Dry season is Belize's high season, and the demand isn't spread evenly across the six months. Christmas and New Year book out furthest in advance and carry the year's highest rates, especially in Placencia and on Ambergris Caye. Easter and the spring-break weeks around it bring a second, slightly less intense spike, concentrated in Cayo. Outside of those windows, rates are still higher than the wet season, but availability loosens up.

Small jungle lodges and private islands have the least inventory to begin with, so they're the first to sell out for a specific week, particularly around the holidays. If your trip strings together more than one region, book the whole itinerary early rather than locking in one leg and hoping the rest falls into place. If value matters more than guaranteed dry weather, May and early November sit just outside peak dry season and tend to combine lower rates with conditions that are still mostly favorable.

Frequently asked questions

What is the driest month in Belize?

April is typically the driest month nationwide, though February and March run close behind it. Southern Belize stays wetter than the north across the entire dry season.

Do nortes affect diving, snorkeling, or boat transfers?

They can. A norte brings wind and choppier seas for a day or two, most often between December and February, and it can push a scheduled excursion to a different day. Conditions usually settle again quickly.

Is dry season the best time to see whale sharks in Belize?

March through June is the window, timed around the full moon and the Cubera snapper spawn at Gladden Spit. It's a strong window, not a guarantee, and current tour availability is worth checking before you build a trip around it.

Should I visit in November or April?

November is milder, less crowded, and cheaper, but still carries some risk of leftover wet-season rain. April is hotter and drier, with the trade-off of Belize's highest demand and rates.

Is it worth visiting Belize just outside the dry season for better value?

Often, yes. Late April into May and early November tend to bring lower rates and lighter crowds while conditions stay largely favorable, which is worth considering if flexibility matters more than guaranteed dry weather.

Is Belize's dry season right for you?

Belize's dry season is great for travelers who want to combine the interior and the coast with few weather-related disruptions. The trade-off is higher rates and heavier demand, especially around Christmas, New Year, Easter, and school breaks.

Planning Belize between November and April? We build custom trips combining the country's jungle, Maya sites, coastline, and reef, with locally run experiences and accommodations selected around your travel style and the month you're actually traveling in, whether that's a cave-and-culture itinerary like Caves, Cayes & Culture or a jungle-to-reef split like Jungle Reef Rush. Start planning your Belize trip, and if the timing is tight around the holidays or Easter, travel insurance is worth a look given how far in advance those weeks book up.
